Pope Francis appointed Mons. José Adolfo Larregain OFM, until now Auxiliary Bishop of that archdiocese, as Coadjutor Archbishop of Corrientes, whose archbishop is Mons. Andrés Stanovnik, whom he will succeed starting in December.

Bishop Larregain will take office as Archbishop of Corrientes on Friday, December 28 at 8:00 p.m. (local time) at the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Cathedral.

Upon hearing the news of his appointment, Bishop Larregain greeted the community and expressed his joy, while thanking “the trust placed in me in the face of this new ministerial assignment and the Apostolic Nuncio for making said appointment public.”

“I thank God for these four years walking together in this beautiful and blessed land. I came to it as a help to Mons. Andrés, whom I thank for his brotherhood, patience and affection,” he expressed.

“Dear Corrientes people, pastoral agents, priests, consecrated life, deacons, brother bishops: I am very happy to continue serving among you. We will continue walking under the Cross of Miracles and the Tender Mother of Itatí encouraging each other,” he assured, wishing everyone “Peace and good!”

The current Archbishop of Corrientes will turn 75 on December 15, the age at which prelates must present their resignation to the Pope.

Who is Bishop José Adolfo Larregain, new Coadjutor Archbishop of Corrientes?

José Adolfo Larregain was born in Adolfo Gonzáles Cháves, province of Buenos Aires (Argentina), on April 3, 1966.

He was ordained a priest in the Order of Friars Minor (OFM, Franciscans) on March 19, 2004.

He carried out his ministry in different areas of Argentina where Franciscan communities are present, and he was parish priest in the Diocese of Merlo-Moreno.

Pope Francis appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Corrientes on March 21, 2020. He received episcopal ordination in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, on June 29 of that year.

His episcopal motto is: “We are witnesses.”
