Argentina: Pope Francis appoints 3 auxiliary bishops for Buenos Aires

Pope Francis appointed three priests from the Buenos Aires clergy as auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires: Mons. Sergio Iván Dornelles, Mons. Alejandro Daniel Pardo, and Mons. Pedro Bernardo Cannavó, the latter will be the youngest in Argentina.

The news of the appointment was known on the morning of Wednesday, June 19, simultaneously in Rome and Buenos Aires, through the AICA agency.

In Buenos Aires, the three will collaborate in the pastoral government of Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva. Until now, the archdiocese had four auxiliary bishops: Mons. Gustavo Carrara, Vicar General; Mons. Joaquín Mariano Sucunza, Provicar General; Bishop Alejandro Giorgi; and Mons. Ernesto Giobando SJ, who is in the Diocese of Mar del Plata as Apostolic Administrator.

From May 2023 until today, three of the bishops who served as auxiliaries of Buenos Aires were appointed by the Pope to occupy other positions: Bishop Juan Carlos Ares is now Bishop of San Carlos de Bariloche; Mons. Who is Mgr. Sergio Iván Dornelles?

Born in the city of General Alvear, province of Corrientes (Argentina), on April 26, 1974, in his youth he belonged to Catholic Action.

He is a lawyer from the University of Buenos Aires, a profession he practiced for some years before entering the Inmaculada Concepción seminary in Buenos Aires in 2000.

He was ordained a priest on November 17, 2007 by the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, today Pope Francis.

He currently serves as parish priest of Our Lady of Mercy; executive director of the Archdiocese Vicariate for Children; national advisor of Catholic Action; member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultants; director of the archdiocesan Pastoral Council and collaborator in the Pastoral Vicariate of Education.

He who will be the youngest bishop in Argentina, at 46 years old, was born in Buenos Aires on April 10, 1978 and completed his secondary studies at the Dr. Dámaso Centeno Social Military Institute, in Buenos Aires.

In 2002 he entered the Immaculate Conception Seminary of Buenos Aires, and was ordained a priest on November 21, 2009, also by the then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

Since 2013 he has served as chaplain of the Dr. Dámaso Centeno Social Military Institute in Buenos Aires, and since 2023 he has been parish priest of Santa María Madre del Pueblo.
