Archbishop Emeritus of Argentina, a member of a Vatican Dicastery dies

Mons. José Luis Mollaghan, Archbishop Emeritus de Rosario (Argentina) died on Saturday, June 7 at 79. He was general secretary of the Argentine Episcopal Conference (CEA) and currently served as a member of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith.

Upon knowing the news, the CEA issued a communication in which the bishops give “thank God for their life and ministry, especially the years at the service of this Argentine Episcopal Conference”, of which it was Secretary General between 1993 and 1999.

Who was Mons. José Luis Mollaghan?

José Luis Mollaghan was born in Buenos Aires on May 2, 1946. He received his priestly ordination on March 19, 1971, in the solemnity of San José.

Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires on July 22, 1993 by Pope San Juan Paul II, he was consecrated Bishop on October 2 of that year in the Metropolitan Cathedral, from the Hour archbishop of the Argentine capital, Cardinal Antonio Quarracino.

Between 1993 and 1999 he was general secretary of the Argentine Episcopal Conference.

On May 17, 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of San Miguel, where he served until 2005, the year he was appointed Archbishop of Rosario. He took possession and began his pastoral ministry as the fourth Archbishop of Rosario on March 18, 2006.

On May 19, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation – today Dicastery – for the doctrine of faith, a position he kept until his death.
