The Archbishop of Valladolid, Mons. Luis Arguello has called to rescue the deep and true meaning of the celebration of First Communion and to celebrate it with simplicity, without organizing a “mini wedding” that distorts this moment.
In a pastoral letter titled Rescue the First Communionthe prelate recalls that this celebration, which is typically held in the month of May in Spain, is for children who prepare for two or three years, “an initiation to the knowledge of Jesus” who, resurrected, becomes present in “something as simple as unfermented bread.”
This act represents an “initiation to the Sunday Eucharist, where the people of God usually congregate” and when we take communion, explains Mons. Argüello, we know that we are “called to live charity, recognizing the Lord in the people around us. ”.
