The Litany of Saint Rose of Lima
José Gálvez Krüger, director of the ACI Prensa Catholic Encyclopedia, which has compiled the “Litany of Saint Rose of Lima”, he explained that a litany is “a prayer that is made up of a sequence of short supplications who rise to God to seek his favor or to the saints to seek their patronage or intercession.”
In the case of the Litany of Santa Rosa, he said, it is “an ancient Lima prayer composed in viceregal times, given that Santa Rosa was the first flower of American holiness.”
The life, virtues and mortifications of Saint Rose of Lima
Gálvez Krüger highlighted that “Saint Rose is a model of obedience, in accordance with the will of God and imitation of the life of Christ”, as well as an “example of a mortified life”.
“Contrary to what malicious people say, mortification was not an obsession in the life of Saint Rose,” stated the director of the Catholic Encyclopedia, but, just as says Lima scholar Rodolfo Vargas Rubio“it was a choice to better conform to the Passion of Jesus Christ according to the acetics of his time, greatly influenced by the modern devotionwhich insisted on the cult of the holy humanity of Jesus Christ, preferably in its suffering aspect, as the source of our redemption.
