An Argentine tennis player was suspended for five years for committing 35 infractions in the anti-corruption program

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) reported this Wednesday that Argentine tennis player Eduardo Agustín Torre has been suspended for a period of five years for 35 violations of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP).

The ITIA explains that the sanction is “related to a recently concluded criminal case involving a match-fixing syndicate in Belgium“.

Collaboration between ITIA and Belgian authorities led to a five-year prison sentence for the union’s leader, Grigor Sargsyan, the agency adds.

The charges against Torre refer to crimes from 2017, but the ITIA case was postponed until after the conclusion of criminal proceedings, the agency emphasizes.

Tower, which In September 2014 he reached 596th place in the individual world rankings, the highest of his career, did not respond to the ITIA accusations. The case was resolved by independent anti-corruption hearing officer Amani Khalifa, who also fined Torre $35,000.

By not responding to the ITIA charges, Torre effectively admitted liability on all charges and agreed to sanctions.“adds the agency.

Violations include, the ITIA explains, “facilitating betting, machinating the outcome of matches, soliciting money or benefits to negatively influence a player’s best efforts, failing to report corrupt approaches, and failing to report corruption crimes”.

The suspension will apply from the date of the decision (April 26, 2024) and will expire at midnight on April 25, 2029.

During the period of ineligibility, Torre is prohibited from playing, training or attending any tennis championships authorized or sanctioned by members of the ITIA (ATP, ITF, WTA, Tennis Australia, French Federation, Wimbledon and USTA) or any national association.

The ITIA reminds that it is an independent body created by its tennis members to promote, encourage, improve and safeguard the integrity of professional tennis throughout the world.

Torre’s last official match was in November 2018 in Viña del Mar. Since then he no longer plays tennis and dedicates himself professionally to paddle tennis in Mexico, where he is currently based.

Eduardo Agustín Torre now plays paddle tennis.
