The original text of the Base Law had more than 600 articles. Due to its size, it was called the ‘bus law’. But upon realizing that the package would not have the support of the National Congress, the government abandoned the project, redid it with just over 200 articles and sent it back to parliament.
The new version of the Basic Law was approved in the Chamber of Deputies and, in a close vote, supported last week in the Senate. Faced with a tie, the vice-president of the country, who is president of the Senate, Victoria Villarruel, gave the casting vote and the text, with the changes, was sent back to the Chamber.
In the Senate, when it was about to be voted on, the government withdrew, for example, the privatization proposals for the airline Aerolíneas Argentinas and public media outlets.
The government now, as Clarín reports in Spanish this Tuesday, intends for deputies to approve the text without the changes made for approval in the Senate.
On Monday (17), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) worsened the outlook for the Argentine economy this year – a drop of 3.5%. The forecast is similar to the one made by the World Bank last week.
The government promised the IMF that it will increase electricity, gas, water and bus tariffs later this year to reduce subsidies for public services and maintain its main goal: zero deficit.
