Milei’s pragmatism in the face of Argentine reality

The back and forth of those who do not carry or bring stories, but who have competence and a long and qualified career, did the fundamental work so that the message for the Chinese ambassador reached its destination. More than a message, it was almost a plea: the government could not pay the first installment of the 5 billion dollar loan that Beijing hurriedly granted to Alberto Fernández. A postponement was desperately needed and they asked for an urgent meeting with the diplomat. The government had its heart in its mouth.

China established only one condition for consent, the same as it had imposed on Fernández: Milei had to go to Beijing, the capital of one of the “axis of evil” countries for libertarians, to personally thank Xi Jinping.

The president, upon learning of this, withdrew everything he had said before. And not only did he immediately accept the condition, he also set a date and proposed traveling on July 7th, as if he could manage the Chinese leader’s schedule. But this overreaction was not rewarded: the date will be set by China’s communist government. In compensation, the loan maturities were transferred to 2026, twice the stipulated time.

It was demonstrated that the need has a heretical face and Milei, who had emphasized that he would not have relations with “communist and terrorist” states, had to swallow the ideological toad and give in to the reality of international relations. Election marketing and idle talk are one thing, serious politics is another.

The relationship with China is no joke and the Chinese take their interests and investments very seriously, regardless of the government. Now, Milei took note that, in addition to the USA and Israel, there are other important actors in the world. And that the important thing is national interests, and not so much, or almost nothing, ideology. Ideology is used to run an electoral campaign.

Chief of Staff Guillermo Francos succeeded in an issue that Chancellor Diana Mondino had been unable to resolve. As happens in these cases, the line of candidates for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs began to form almost instantly: Daniel Scioli is already nominating himself for the San Martín Palace (he would have requested the good offices of the businessman and former boss of Milei Eduardo Eurnekian) , but the president’s plans would go through Demian Reidel, head of the presidential advisors’ office, who traveled to Italy on the presidential plane, for the G7 meeting, and the Argentine ambassador in Washington, Gerardo Werthein.

Last week was the best week of the Milei government. The Basic Law was approved in the Senate, monthly inflation was the lowest in a long time (4.2% in May) and the IMF made a disbursement of 800 million dollars, which would not have happened without the agreement with the Chinese.

The vice president, Victoria Villarruel, also president of the Senate, did what was expected. Her vote broke the tie in the vote on the Base Law project and gave Milei the general sanction of the law, which still needs to be reviewed by deputies and which lost a lot of content along the way.

The governing party, A Liberdade Avança (LLA), celebrated the victory, but the game is not over yet. Even with the dismantling of the original project, another battle is expected in the Chamber of Deputies, where political/party alliances will be put to the test.
