The Archdiocese of Valladolid and the Sacred Heart of Jesus

On May 14, 1773, the feast of the Ascension of the Lord, the young Bernardo de Hoyos, after taking communion, had a vision of the sacred Heart of Jesus “surrounded with the crown of thorns and with a cross at the top end” in the who made him what was known as the Great Promise: “I will reign in Spain and with more veneration than in other parts.”

Thus, the future blessed committed his life to spreading this devotion throughout all the territories of Spain, which at that time included, in addition to the peninsular areas in Europe, all of Latin America and the current Philippines.

The current Basilica of the Great Promise was then the College of San Ambrosio, where future Jesuits were trained in Valladolid, among whom was Bernardo de Hoyos.

From June 16, 2023 until June 7, 2024, the Archdiocese of Valladolid celebrated a jubilee year on the occasion of the centenary of the enthronement of the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the tower of the Cathedral.
