Skin flooding, the ultra hydration technique to recover elasticity in the skin

Flood the skin to ensure maximum hydration. That is the mission of this technique that seeks restore skin elasticity and that went viral as a trend on social networks. Translated as “skin flooding,” it consists of applying – one after another – different layers of moisturizing formulas to give the dermis that special boost that makes it look pink and healthy.

Although it has been in vogue for some time, this trend in facial care is nothing new for those who are in the habit of taking care of their skin daily. Skin flooding consists of apply layers of moisturizing formulas: mists, micellar waters, serums, lotions and creams in a certain order and on damp skin to maximize hydration.

“This practice is something that in dermatology we have always recommended to help a uniform product absorption and that the nutrients fulfill the necessary function,” explains Leticia Pees Labory, family doctor and Botik-Puro advisor.

“In that sense, the skin flooding trend takes us back to the basics of skin care, as it focuses on the importance of hydration to develop the entire skin barrier. It is a good strategy to use when the condition of the skin fluctuates and to feel healthy, fresh, vital and lush again,” adds the expert.

Suitable for all skin biotypes, this technique allows you to maintain skin hydration for longer, reinforce its barrier function and protect it from external aggressions such as UV radiation and some pathogens. At the same time, prevents transepidermal water loss.

The order matters. The skin flooding requires a specific order in the application of the products. That is the golden rule to achieve good results since, otherwise, it can cause an effect opposite to the desired one. Always start with the lightest textures to continue with the densest ones. That is: cleanser, toner or lotion, serum, gel and cream.

The lighter the product, the smaller the molecule size will be and therefore it will reach deeper levels in the skin. Anyway, it is not necessary to apply all the mentioned products, but rather adjust to a planned routine according to what each skin needs.

Karla Vasconcel, university technician in cosmetology, cosmiatry and aesthetics and Lidherma trainer, suggests five steps. “The first step of any routine is to clean your face to eliminate impurities. The hygiene product is applied, rinsed, and with damp skin, continue with the next step.

“Our face also needs a daily bath and like our teeth, we must do it at least twice a day – in the morning and at night – to release skin and pores of any type of contamination to which we have been exposed, whether awake or asleep,” adds dermatologist Florencia Paniego, a specialist in acne and rosacea.

Then, it is the turn of the concentrated active or specific high-power formula for specific skin needs, which achieves effective results in less time. As a third step, it is time to apply the lotion; With a light texture, it allows the skin to retain moisture.

It’s time to move on to the serum, a product with a high concentration of active ingredients and a liquid texture that promotes rapid and deep absorption. Finally, it is finished with a moisturizing cream.” This step gives the skin up to 48 hours of hydration continuous and helps protect it against climatic, environmental factors and UV radiation.

As usual, consultation is of utmost importance since the professional will indicate which products the skin needs. “That they are dermatologically and clinically tested, hypoallergenic, TACC-free, with natural ingredients, cruelty-free and without petrolatum derivatives add value and help better conscious nutrition of the skin,” concludes Pees Labory.
