In the Acts of the Apostles He is described as a beloved figure in the Church of Jerusalem, who was often called “the bishop.” Saint Paul mentions it in his Letter to the Galatians, putting it next to Saint Peter and Saint John. Furthermore, the Apostle of Gentiles says that after his conversion he wanted to meet with Peter, but he did not find any disciple in the city except James. On his last visit to the Holy City, Paul himself went directly to James’ house, where he met with all the leaders of the Church of Jerusalem (Acts 21:15).
Santiago is sometimes designated as “the one who intercedes for the people.” According to tradition, this apostle receives this nickname because he always prayed asking God for forgiveness for the sins of his people.
The same tradition preserves the story of an episode in which James was the cause of scandal among the Pharisees and scribes. The high priest, Annas II, taking advantage of the crowd that was present at the Jewish festival, questioned him saying: “We ask you that since the people feel great admiration for you, you go before the crowd and tell them that Jesus is not the Messiah. or Redeemer.” To this request, James responded: “Jesus is the one sent by God for the salvation of those who want to be saved. And we will see him one day above the clouds, sitting at the right hand of God.”
