There are bars that are much more than that. They tell the history of a town. And, in some way, they are a part of the place.
Pass the door of the Yorio’s Bar is to immerse yourself in a time travel; a good way to start discovering Los Cardales, just over an hour’s drive from the City of Buenos Aires.
In the main room of the bar and ice cream parlor, you can see an old cash register, a bottle of Bols gin and a long play by Jorge Cafrune, dedicated by the musician himself, who settled in the area in the 60s. There is also a facón that the folklorist gave to the Di Yorio family in those years.
“The first telephone in Los Cardales worked here,” says a sign next to an old public telephone.
The rest of the place, founded in 1925, is also full of objects with stories, those that are no longer used, but that help imagine other times: an old television, a player piano, a small collection of porcelain dolls and a tricycle. In front, the bar has a beautiful wooden barwhich invites you to sit and spend hours.
one of the tableswith a sign, tell your story: “At this table, one of the original and oldest in the bar, at the beginning of the 20th century, personalities like Dr. Juan B. Justo enjoyed their mornings and afternoons. The great Jorge Cafrune delighted us with his most memorable songs.”
The square and the train
Bar Di Yorio is just one of the points to visit in the town that was born at the beginning of the 20th century with the arrival of the Miter Railway.
The Miter Squarelocated right in front of the station and the warehouse area, is one of the meeting points for locals and also visitors, who come to enjoy the woodedgames for boys and also for a slower time.
With the development of gated communities that have emerged in recent decades in the area of Exaltation of the Cross and Campana, in addition to hotels and rural resorts, the gastronomic offer of Los Cardales was also increasingly developed to serve the growing number of diners.
In it Gusta restaurant -Site of Heritage Interest-, a sign announces that the first bakery in Los Cardales in 1910.
The place preserves the original wood oven and offers a menu dominated by pastas and meats, along with a varied selection of wines. At the back of the house, there is a small garden to enjoy lunch or dinner (Av. San Martín 260; Wednesday to Sunday).
Chizza It is one of the most recognized restaurants in the area, with fresh fish, pasta and meat dishes that go beyond the usual ones, such as deer goulash, rabbit loin and roast wild boar (Alsina 120).
A few kilometers from the center of Los Cardales is The Pebeta (on San Antonio de Areco street), a restaurant that works with the farm to table concept; that is, from the land to the table.
“We are a agroecological farm, a restaurant and a grocery store”, are defined. In addition to having lunch, you can visit the garden from eleven in the morning.
Parties and a legend
The town of Los Cardales also offers an agenda of activities throughout the year, such as the traditional Bonfire of San Juan – now called Los Cardales Bonfire, with a gastronomic patio, artisans and games; last year it turned 30 -, the Classic Car Meeting and the Flavors of the World Gastronomic Fair, which bring together thousands of people who come from different parts of the province.
Walking through the streets of the town, it is easy to find the door of the Unión Progresista Social and Sports Club, the oldest in Los Cardales and a source of local pride. There he debuted Alfredo Di Stefano, one of the greatest players in the history of football. The rest is known history.
