Earlier this month, the Vatican published the statement Infinite dignitywhich warns of 13 “serious violations” of human dignity, one of which is euthanasia.
In this regard, the text points out that “the idea is widespread that euthanasia or assisted suicide are compatible with respect for the dignity of the human person.”
“Faced with this fact,” he indicates, “it must be strongly reaffirmed that suffering does not make the patient lose that dignity that is intrinsically and inalienably his own, but rather it can become an opportunity to strengthen the ties of mutual belonging and become more aware.” of how precious each person is to the whole of humanity.”
After encouraging palliative care for the sick, the document specifies that “helping a suicidal person to take his own life is, therefore, an objective offense against the dignity of the person who asks for it, even if this would fulfill his wish.”
