Chile announced this Thursday, April 18, the construction of a commercial airport in the coastal region of Valparaíso, 120 kilometers west of Santiago, the capital.
It is expected to begin receiving national and international flights in 2027.
The interesting for the Argentine market is that it is expected to receive flights from Argentine cities such as Mendoza, Córdoba and Buenos Aires and, due to its location, it gives access to some of the most chosen beaches for summer.
The project takes the Viña del Mar Aerodrome as its starting point. With an investment of 78.6 million dollars, the existing structure on the Torquemada de Concón hill and managed by the Chilean Navy since 1987 will be improved and expanded.
“The transformation of the aerodrome into an airport of Concón is a source of pride,” said the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, during an official event.
“This news is going to have a important impact on tourism which is fundamental in the community. We know that tourism has had a hard time after the pandemic, it has been difficult for it to recover.”
What will the new airport be like and what destinations will it connect?
The works are scheduled for widening and lengthening of runways and the construction of a new passenger terminal of more than 4,000 square meters, a new control tower, an electrical substation and parking lots, among other facilities.

“It has been 12 years since the construction of a new airport was launched in Chile. We will be in a position to begin construction work on the passenger terminal next year, to later formally begin commercial flights,” stated the Minister of Public Works, Jessica López.
Estimates indicate that this airport will allow transport 900,000 passengers a year and will contribute to promoting tourism in the region, famous for its beaches, the most visited in the country.
Among the national routes that are planned to operate from and to this airport, we must mention flights to and from Antofagasta, Calama, La Serena, Concepción and Puerto Montt (all in Chile).
And in terms of international flights, it is planned to connect this airport with others in Argentina such as Mendoza, Córdoba and Buenos Aires.
“This is how Chile is built, with a long-term vision,” added Boric.
What are the beaches of Viña del Mar and surroundings like?
A big city with beaches and all services and entertainment, from casinos, pubs and discos to restaurants. Viña is considered the main summer resort in the South Pacific and is the great classic from Chile.
Very close there are other destinations that are also very popular, such as Reñaca (7 kilometers away) and With with (13 kilometers away), which is called the “gastronomic capital of Chile” because it has many restaurants specializing in fish and seafood.
