USA: Bishop of Charlotte resigns at age 67 and Pope Francis names successor

The Vatican Press Office reported this April 9 that Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Mons. Peter J. Jugis, Bishop of Charlotte (United States). The Holy Father has named as his successor the conventual Franciscan priest Michael T. Martin, of the province of Our Lady of the Angels, until now parish priest of Saint Philip Benizi parish in Atlanta, state of Georgia.

He Catholic News Herald of the Diocese of Charlotte reported that Bishop Jugis, 67, submitted his resignation in June 2023 due to a chronic kidney condition, which “made it difficult for him to preside over long liturgies and travel throughout the 46 counties of the sprawling diocese.”

The prelate, who recently celebrated 20 years as a bishop and 40 as a priest, will be the Diocesan Administrator until the installation of the new bishop, which is scheduled for May 29.
