Archbishop of San José receives Masonic leaders from Costa Rica

The meeting in Italy, which sought to establish a direct dialogue between Freemasonry and the Catholic Church, also included the participation of Stefano Bisi, grand master of the Italian Grand Orient, the oldest Masonic entity in Italy.

In its statement of March 12, the Grand Lodge of Costa Rica points out that “a similar tenor” had the meeting, which lasted about 45 minutes with the Archbishop of San José, in which they told him “some generalities of the order in Costa Rica , our vision on some central problems of humanity and we talked about the figure of the Presb. Respectable Founding Brother Francisco Calvo, a figure of whom Monsignor José Rafael Quirós naturally knew.”

Father Francisco Cipriano Calvo (1819-1890) became a Mason in 1862 in Peru and founded the first Masonic lodge in Costa Rica in 1865. He was chaplain of the Costa Rican army during the National Campaign of 1856-1857 and is the author of the Book of deathswhere it compiles data on those killed in said military campaign, included in 2016 in the UNESCO national Memory of the World registry.
