The Argentine Federal Court of Cassation confirmed the mistrial carried out in 1978 for the death of the Argentine bishop Carlos Horacio Ponce de León, who died in a car accident. A new process will now be opened to prove that it was a crime against humanity.
Mons. Carlos Horacio Ponce de León was serving as Bishop of San Nicolás (Argentina) when on July 11, 1977, after receiving continuous threats, he died in what was initially classified as an accident.
According to the recent opinion of the Chamber of Cassation, a body that is responsible for reviewing and has the capacity to annul sentences, the 1978 trial contained many procedural defects that could be interpreted as cover-up maneuvers.
