Priestly celibacy: Bishop Munilla rejects suppressing it as proposed by Bishop Scicluna

The Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante, Mons. Jose Ignatius Munilla, has raised through their social networks three arguments and a question on the proposal reiterated by the Archbishop of Malta, Mons. Charles Scicluna, to abolish priestly celibacy.

In a recent interview, Bishop Scicluna stated: “Why should we lose a young man who would have been a good priest, just because he wanted to get married? And we have lost good priests just because they chose marriage.”

The Spanish prelate refutes the approach expressed by the also assistant secretary of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, asking: “Do you really believe that marriage is the remedy against priestly infidelity?” In this sense, the Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante puts on the table that “there are many marriages with double lives” and wonders what will have to be done “with priests who divorce.”
