Catholic Church in Mexico summons a second national dialogue for peace

The Catholic Church convened a second edition of the “National Dialogue for Peace” from January 30 to February 1, 2026, aiming to continue the work done in recent years, as well as “strengthen alliances” throughout the country “to improve social fabric, security and justice.”

The headquarters of this second edition will be the Jesuit University of Guadalajara, Jalisco. The call is made jointly by the Mexican Episcopate Conference (CEM), the Episcopal Dimension for the laity, the Conference of Superior Superiors of Religious of Mexico and the Society of Jesus.

In a communication Extended on September 21, within the framework of the International Peace Day, Catholic organizations thanked all Mexicans who added their “efforts to create the conditions to build peace in Mexico”, highlighting that “the commitment of thousands of people, groups, movements and institutions inspires us and drives us to continue weaving networks that allow improving social fabric, justice and security in the territory”.

The first National Dialogue for Peace was held at the Universidad Iberoamericana (Ibero) Headquarters, in September 2023, in response to the murder, a year earlier, of the Jesuit priests Javier Campos Morales and Joaquín César Mora Salazar in Cerocahui, in the Sierra Tarahumara in Chihuahua.

Fruit of that first meeting arose the Citizen Agreement for Peace and the National Peace Agenda, efforts to deal with the unbridled wave of violence that Mexico is experiencing.

The six -year after 2018 to 2024, during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, founder of the Left Party Morena, was the most violent in the modern history of Mexico, adding 199,970 homicides, according to the report MX: The war in numbers.

The Catholic organizations highlighted in their statement that in the years that followed the first national dialogue for peace “we have identified good practices, lying bridges and developed and implemented concrete methodologies so that each sector of the country, each individual, each community can contribute to peace from co -responsibility and common work.”

However, they acknowledged, “the way is long and the immense challenges. The culture of violence and impunity, inequality, injustice, prevailing distrust, continue to gain ground, snatching young people, dreams, future.”

At the same time, they remembered various victims of violence in Mexico, including lay people and Catholic priests, whose memory, they said, “it drives us with strength and hope to the construction of peace.”

“It’s time to meet our eyes and will on stopping pain and barbarism do what we have to do to recover peace in the country,” they said.
