Fr. Edgar Rimaycuna Inga, personal secretary of Pope Leo XIV, said in a Mass in Chiclayo (Peru), that Catholics have the duty to pray for the Holy Father because if he is Peter in the Church, “the demon will not be calm.”
This was indicated by the Peruvian priest in the homily of the Misa That he presided, in the midst of an atmosphere of great joy, on Sunday, August 10 at night, in the atrium of the San José Obrero parish in the district of La Victoria, in Chiclayo, the diocese where Leo XIV was Apostolic Administrator and Bishop between 2014 and 2023.

Pray for Pope Leo XIV
“What does the Lord demand us? First, to pray for the Pope. All of us now have two reasons to pray for the Pope,” said Father Rimaycuna before the faithful and civil authorities gathered in the place.
“And Chiclayo has the second reason, and it is evident, because we know him. We also have the duty to protect it with our prayer, to defend it, because if he is Peter, the firm rock of the Church, because the demon will not be calm,” said the priest.
A double Leo XIV gift for Chiclayo
In his homily, the priest commented that “the Holy Father, Pope León, in a gesture of benevolence and appreciation, has been good to donate this miter to the San José Obrero de la Victoria parish, as a sign of union between the Roman Pontiff and the holy people of God who pilgrims in Chiclayo.”
Papal miter is the liturgical hat used by the Holy Father in liturgical celebrations, such as solemn masses, and that on Sunday was exposed to the faithful.
In addition to this gift, Pope Leo XIV sent an economic donation that, according to the Peruvian Episcopal Conferencewill serve for the construction of the Óscar Romero chapel, the Salvadoran Holy Archbishop killed in 1980 during a mass.
Fr. Rimaycuna also said that a day before, on Saturday, “I had the opportunity to talk to him, I told him about this Eucharist and told me this: ‘Tell them to send them many greetings and my apostolic blessing.’ The Holy Father has us all as a chiclayo in his heart.”
Coherence with the Gospel
Fr. Rimaycuna also said that “it would not be consistent to say ‘alive the Pope, that we have the Peruvian Pope, Pope Chiclayano’, but then our life does not correspond to the Gospel that the Holy Father preaches. He would colloquially say: that person only climbs into the car, and this does not want the Lord”.
“Our life has to be consistent with the Gospel, consistent with the Word of God that we hear and celebrate in the Eucharist, that we ask our Lord to help us always prepare,” said the priest.
“And also, as the Gospel says, we are required to be prepared for when He comes, not the Holy Father, but the Lord. Hopefully the Holy Father come soon. And we will be happy to receive it here, in his diocese, but above all to be prepared for when Jesus comes.”
