According to the Government of Mexico Citythe narrative includes episodes such as independence, Mexican revolution and “recent events such as the arrival of the first march of LGBTIQ+ pride to the Zocalo, the decriminalization of abortion, the choice of two women heads of government, and the consolidation of a city of rights and freedoms.”

Among the projected images on the facade of the religious enclosure are women with green scarves, symbols of the feminist movement and a poster with the legend “safe abortion”.

Messages that “hurt and hurt faith”

In a statement Shared on July 15, the cathedral reported not having been previously consulted on the contents of the show. He clarified that the production of Light memory “It is alien and external to the Archdiocese of Mexico,” and said that no religious authority “has participated in the pre -production or script of said show.”

The text specifies that although the cathedral property belongs to the federal government – as established by the Law of Religious Associations and Public Worship for the temples prior to 1992, the year in which the relations between the State and the Catholic Church were restored – its use and administration corresponds exclusively to the primed archdiocese of Mexico, including responsibility for the messages that are disseminated in its facade and atrios.

However, the religious authorities indicated that they were only informed that both the cathedral facade and that of the Tabernacle “would serve as canvases for such projection taking into account the colonial and baroque period that would supposedly be projected in these spaces.”

Therefore, they regretted that “various legends and images that deeply hurt and the fundamental principles that Catholics profess” will be deeply hurt.

“Regardless of the fact that, since there is a division between religious freedom and public policies, both protected by our Constitution, the free expression of ideas is respected having as a framework their respective enclosures and spaces, it is objectionable that, specifically messages against the Catholic principles are those that are projected in this Holy Cathedral Church,” said the statement.

Finally, they called on the authorities of Mexico City so that, in the use of their powers, there are necessary indications so that on the facade of the temple “the projection of messages contrary to the Catholic faith is avoided at all times, which the devotion of the Mexican people hurt in the deepest.”
