Pope Leo XIV names the new Bishop of Hipona, the headquarters of San Agustín

Pope Leo XIV appointed Mons. Michel Guillaud, from the clergy of Lyon (France), as the new Bishop of Hippo (Algeria), the headquarters of which Bishop San Agustín, father and doctor of the Church, was also inspiring in the order of the Augustinians to which the Holy Father belongs.

San Agustín (354-430), a spiritual master of Leo XIV, was ordered priest in Hippo in the year 391, and consecrated Bishop four years later, in 395.

The elected bishop this Friday, July 11 assumes the Diocese of San Agustín, which in 1867 changed his name to Constantine (Hipona), according to the website Catholic Hierarchyspecialized in the bishops of the Catholic Church.

Who is the new Bishop of Constantine (Hipona)?

Mons. Michel Guillaud was born on June 24, 1961 in Villeurbanne (France). He is 64 years old.

After studying at the University Seminary of Lyon and obtaining the Bachelor of Theology, he obtained a degree in Islamology at the Pontifical Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (Pisai) of Rome.

He was ordained a priest on July 1, 1990 for the Archdiocese of Lyon.

He has played, among others, the following positions: Professor of Islamology at the Catholic Faculty of Lyon; Student chaplain at the Catholic University of Lyon; Pastor in Batna (2006-2014), in Constantine (2014-2016), in Skikda (2016-until today) and Vicar General of the Diocese of Constantine (2020-2024).

He has also been Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of the Northern Africa (CERNA) (2015-2025).
