Sacred Heart of Jesus in Uruguay: The country will renew its consecration after 150 years

150 years of the day when Jacinto Vera, the first Uruguayan Blessed, put the country under the protection of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Uruguay will renew its consecration.

On June 12, within the framework of the jubilee of the priests and in the month of the Sacred Heart, the renewal of the consecration in the sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be carried out in the Cerrito de la Victoria.

Cardinal Daniel Sturla, Archbishop of Montevideo, summoned the community to participate in the Mass, to be held at 4:00 p.m.

In addition, he invited to carry out the consecration of the Archdiocese, on Sunday, June 22, at the end of the Solemn Corpus Christi procession, which will depart from the San Miguel Garicoits parish (Basques) towards the Our Lady of Carmen de la Aguada parish.

“In the week of the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which this year is Friday, June 27, we are invited to make consecration in each parish community, public church, educational center, social work and in each family,” said the purple.

History of consecration

In 1875, in a context of questions and attacks on Catholic doctrine through the press and education, and within the framework of the Holy Year declared by Pope Pius IX, the then Apostolic Vicar Jacinto Vera decided to consecrate the Vicariate of Uruguay to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Within that framework, he wrote two pastoral letters, and in one of them he encouraged “to the prayer and the practice of the works of piety and charity”, to go to the Lord, “inexhaustible source of infinite mercy. That of whose Holy Heart the immaculate wife of the lamb, the Holy Church, asking him to accelerate the time of the triumph of that divine heart in the hearts of all men”.

“To that Holy Center and volcano of the purest love, it is whom we owe in a special way to return our eyes putting our hope in it, in these moments of proof,” he exhorted.

To do this, Mons. Jacinto Vera ordered that the event of consecration be held on June 4 in all the churches of Montevideo, and outside the capital when the parish priests would consider it appropriate.

He also called to establish the pia union of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the practice of repair communion, where he has not yet existed.

The act of consecration of the Apostolic Vicariate to the Sacred Heart of Jesus took place in the Matrix Church, on the night of June 4.

Prostrate before the altar and accompanied by a large number of faithful, the vicar began the solemn act of consecration.

After the sentence of consecration, the te deum te deum was sung and Mons. Vera taught the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament, remaining from that moment Uruguay under the protection of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

In this 2025, 150 years after that event, and in a new jubilee year, Uruguay will repeat that act of consecration, thus renewing its willingness to remain linked to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

This year, called to be “pilgrims of hope”, the Uruguayan faithful will once again pronounce that ancient prayer, an act that will be repeated in the parishes of the interior of the country on the day of the liturgical party of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

With this gesture, the intention is to turn the eyes and heart to that divine heart, putting in it the hope of the homeland.
