Córdoba Workshops became champion of the International Super Cupwhich is -Vaya paradox- a tournament organized by AFA, a national competition. This is the second edition of the competition created to measure forces, at first, between the champion of the tournament and that of the Argentine Cup, but after the consecration of Patronate of Paranáit was defined that he is the winner of the champions trophy and the first of the general table. The first edition was played in January 2023 and Racing won Boca 2-1 in United Arab Emirates. The ‘T’, is the Argentine team number 42 that is crowned in a higher competition of AFA and the 33 of a National Cup.
One of the great teams in the country finally an old dream that began in 1969 when he debuted in the old nationals. The structure of our country is complex, national football was always first associated with the city of Buenos Aires (the old Federal Capital) and the nearby conurbano, from Avellaneda to Lanús, from Vicente López to Tigre. Then, at the end of the 30s and early 40s, the Rosario and Santafesinos arrived. Finally, since 1967, teams of the most important leagues in the country had their chance.
The ‘T’, founded on October 12, 1913, immediately became one of the great animators of the Cordoba League and two years later he achieved his first title. In the main tournament of this province he won it 27 times And he had 21 when he managed to qualify for the first time to the old national tournaments, in 1969. The second participation was in 1970 and since 1974 he was fixed. They were the best boutique years in the Jardín neighborhood.
In 1974 he participated in the final round of the National for the title, but on that occasion he was fourth behind San Lorenzo, Central and Vélez. The following year he qualified again for the final round but finished sixth. In 1976 again he won his area, but was eliminated in the semifinals by River. And in 1977 it was the closest thing that was to be champion so far.
The 1977 National was played in four areas of eight teams each, that is, 36 participants. Workshops won group C and left Racing, River and Vélez, Platense, Sarmiento, Colón and Gymnastics behind. He also had players who were already in the Menotti team, like Luis Adolfo Galván, Miguel Ángel Oviedo, Daniel Valencia (the three world champions), and Humberto Bravo, Luis Ludueña, Antonio Alderete, Víctor Ocaño y Chirogaalso cited by El Flaco in the previous years.
That year only the first of each group were classified. In the semifinals, workshops defeated Newell’s 2 to 1 and played the final with Independiente, who had defeated students 4 to 2. In the first leg, they matched 1-1 in Avellaneda. In the return, workshops won 2-1 and El Red stayed with eight for the expulsion of Enzo Trossero, Rubén Galván and Omar Larrosa for vehementing that the goal of Héctor Bocanelli, at 29 minutes of the second half, had been with his hand. The last 15 minutes were 11 against 8 and 38, Ricardo Enrique Bochini scored the tie goal. As at that time the double visitor goal, the red was epic and champion.
In 1978, workshops again was semifinalist and in 1979 he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. That was the first year of Julio Grondona as AFA Presidentwhich opened the doors to the indirectly affiliated teams to play the First Division tournament, if two years were classified or three alternated to the final instances of the National. Workshops was the first to achieve it. He was followed by Institute and Racing de Córdoba.
The 1980 Metropolitan was the first participation of workshops in the traditional First Division tournament and was third of River Champion and Argentines, with Diego Maradona, runner -up. He played in the A uninterrupted until 1993, when he descended to the National B. He returned the following year and in 1999 he was champion of the Conmebol Cup, an international third level competition behind the Libertadores and the Super Cup.
In 2004 he lost the category again, it took 12 years to rebuild and return to the First Division. Since 2016 he was always the protagonist but the title was elusive. He even reached this final without being champion, since River stayed in 2023 with the champions trophy and was the first of the annual table. Workshops was second and that’s why he was on Wednesday in Paraguay, where he celebrated his first title in AFA.
