In this context, the Mexican Episcopate Conference (CEM) He issued a statement On February 24, noting that the actions announced by the US government seek to “press our country to achieve very specific goals in their government plans.”
“Combat the activity of organized crime dedicated to drug trafficking, address the migratory issue and overcome disadvantages in economic relations between the two countries that, according to their criteria, are unfavorable for North America,” warns the statement.
However, they expressed their confidence that these challenges can face “in a climate of unity between the different Mexican political forces to promote a respectful dialogue and a prudent openness towards the US government to agree on a mutual collaboration.”
“The true enemy we have in our own country”
The CEM also stressed that, beyond external policies, “the true enemy we have in our own country where we need an authentic national unity, to overcome our serious internal problems that have not been properly addressed for years and more and more are aggravated ”
They pointed out problems such as “the corruption that all our environments continue to invade”, “the insecurity that extends its bloodthirsty fury in increasingly broad territories”, the “institutional deterioration to the degree that the law no longer governs, but the will of those who impose ”; among others.
Despite the numerous challenges, the bishops indicated that many of the challenges facing the country can be overcome “through inclusive government strategies that take into account the different political forces, organized civil society, religious associations and citizen participation in general”.
Finally, they called on all Mexicans to join in prayer for the country, to be peace builders in their daily environments and actively commit themselves in the search for the common good.
