Once the episode was over, San Severino gained the respect of everyone, even among the barbarians who were filled with fear just by hearing his name. From then on, it was Severino who became the defender of the invaded towns and their victims.
His fame increased even more due to the miraculous cures he performed. It should be said that he was not a “simple miracle worker.” Severino taught that sometimes God allows suffering as a means to reach Him. Precisely, tradition includes a curious story in which the saint tells his disciple, Bonoso: “If you are sick, you can become a saint. But if you are very healthy you will be lost.” And the fact is that, for 40 years, Bonoso had suffered from a painful illness. Bonoso finally understood that God had used that suffering to make him holier, stronger, and more complete.
Saint Severino liked to repeat phrases from the Bible and always remember that every sin has consequences and that, on many occasions, given the severity or insistence of the fault, punishments can come from heaven.
