Chile: Online diploma on prevention of abuse in the Catholic Church

The Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Chile offers a new edition of its Diploma in Prevention of Abuse and Promotion of Healthy Environments in Ecclesial Contexts.

The diploma is an interdisciplinary proposal, with contributions from theology, human sciences, law and spirituality. In addition, it has the collaboration of institutions such as the Interdisciplinary Research and Training Center for the Protection of Minors (CEPROME), the Episcopal Delegation for Truth and Peace of the Archbishopric of Santiago, and the National Council for the Prevention of Abuse of the Conference Episcopal of Chile.

This is an online training program for professionals and community leaders around the world in creating healthy environments and preventing abuse.

Since its presentation in 2021, and throughout its four editions, the diploma has contributed to the training of more than 180 graduates, who today lead change initiatives in their communities, educational institutions, and social organizations.

Professionals from different countries and sectors participated in previous editions. In the case of Martín Ignacio Pascual, director of the San Juan de Ávila Institute and episcopal delegate for education in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz, Argentina, motivated by the issue that he considers “urgent” within the Church, he valued the learning “not only about sexual abuse, but about how to prevent it and create healthy environments. The practical tools of the diploma have already helped me face critical situations and build healthier communities,” he stated.

From Ecuador, Eva Peñafiel, from SOS Children’s Villages, highlighted the professional exchange made possible by the online format: “The diploma gives us ethical and practical tools to face challenges with courage and coherence, always from the right side of history.”

The format is 100% online and spaces are limited. It is aimed at teachers, pastoral agents, members of ecclesial communities, professionals linked to training, and officials of companies or organizations that wish to promote healthy work environments.
