5. The Day of Peace is also celebrated on the same day
Over time, this memory of the Virgin was displaced to commemorate the “Circumcision of the Lord”, but the Marian accent would be maintained. In 1931 Pope Pius XI reestablished it for October 11 on the occasion of the 15th centenary of the Council of Ephesus and gave it a category equivalent to the current Solemnity.
Years later on that date, October 11, 1962, Saint John XXIII inaugurated the Second Vatican Council.
With the liturgical reform of 1969, the “Maternity of Mary” began to be celebrated on January 1, the day on which the “civil calendar” begins. A year earlier, in 1968, Saint Paul VI had established the World Day of Peace for this day. Thus, on the first day of the year, Mary is celebrated and people pray for peace.
