Invoking the spirit of Christmas, leaders of the Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Syriac, Armenian and other churches thanked God for the recent ceasefire on the Lebanese front of the Israeli conflict.

The message further urged that the same spirit “spread to Gaza and many other places, ending the wars that have plagued our part of the world.”

Additionally, Christians in neighboring Syria now face greater uncertainty after jihadist rebel forces quickly overthrown to the government of President Bashaar al-Assad earlier this month.

“Despite suffering many difficulties, (the early Christians) continued to transmit the holy light of the resurrection of Christ, becoming his witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout the Holy Land and to the ends of the earth,” the leaders noted.

“Externally, little appears to have changed,” the letter said. “Yet, within, the sacred birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ sparked a spiritual revolution that continues to transform countless hearts and minds toward the paths of justice, mercy and peace.”

The patriarchs and heads of the churches of Jerusalem called on all Christians during the Christmas season and beyond to pray and work for peace “both in the homeland of Christ and wherever there are conflicts and strife.”

“By doing so together,” they wrote, “we will truly honor the Prince of Peace who was born so humbly in a stable in Bethlehem more than two millennia ago.”
