These reflections were shared by Dr. Calva during the ceremony in which she received the Ramón Sánchez Medal Award 2024 awarded by the Mexican Commission on Human Rights (CMDH), in recognition of their outstanding work in the defense of life and human dignity.
In her intervention, Dr. Calva, who completed her postgraduate studies under the tutelage of the French doctor Jérôme Lejeune, discoverer of trisomy 21, highlighted the importance of seeing life with “eyes of faith” as a way to counteract manipulation. of the truth.
1. “Faith in life”
In her speech, Dr. Calva stressed that having “faith in life” is crucial, since each human life has “immeasurable value.”
She pointed out that this value “is not something that can be turned off,” since, according to the expert, “it is inherent to the person and we know that it exists from the beginning of life.”
Dr. Calva also indicated that the work of doctors and scientists is to confirm that “life begins at the precise moment when the egg and sperm unite,” and that the value of life “does not change due to the circumstances that may occur.” be terrible in which this conception and this value of life was given is until the last breath.”

Dr. Calva also urged society to have “faith in the existence of universal values” such as those enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which establishes, among others, that “every individual has the right to life, to the freedom and security of his person.”
He highlighted the need to defend these universal values, such as “do not kill, do not lie, do not steal”, which must be defended against ethical relativism.
