According to a note dated December 5 from the Archdiocese of Managuathe cardinal visited the parish of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, in the historic center of the Nicaraguan capital, where on the night of Wednesday the 4th “a part of the resurrected Christ collapsed from the main altar of the temple.” “Thank God there was no human damage to regret,” the text adds.
The image, the statement states, was designed by master Rodrigo Peñalba and executed by sculptor Fernando Saravia with “cast concrete.” The collapse, he adds, occurred “due to deterioration, an effect of the passage of time.”
According to the newspaper Confidencial, the image—which had been in the temple since its construction in 1968 and which withstood the 1972 earthquake—had been weakened by the constant earthquakes that occur in Managua.
The statement indicates that the parish administrator, Father Michel Medina, received a visit on December 5 from the “highest building authorities and the Ministry of Culture, who, in addition to confirming the event, immediately ordered to take care and security measures for the rest of the parish. the work and began the studies that will lead to the restoration of said mural.”
