Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

Today, the XXXIV Sunday of Ordinary Time, the Catholic Church celebrates the “Solemnity of Christ the King” or “Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.”

The Gospel says: “I am King. For this I was born, for this I came into the world, to be a witness of the Truth” (Jn 18, 36-37).

With the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Catholic Church concludes the Liturgical Year by reminding the entire world that nothing – person or human law – is above God. Christ is Lord of time and history, as he is Lord of all creation.

Sense of celebration

The Solemnity of “Christ, King of the Universe” was instituted by Pope Pius As a good shepherd, he guides the portion of the Church that is pilgrim on earth towards its final destination: the Kingdom of God.

It should not be forgotten, furthermore, that the possibility of reaching the Kingdom of God was already won by Christ himself, and that this is preserved in the Church and thanks to the Church. That is to say, the Church founded by Jesus is a guarantee that victory is always possible, and that the doors of heaven are always open. It is the Holy Spirit whom Christ entrusted with granting the necessary graces so that everyone can achieve holiness and transform the world according to his holy will.

Reading of the Gospel (Jn 18, 33-37)

At that time, Pilate asked Jesus: “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus answered him: “Are you asking that on your own or have others told you?” Pilate answered him: “Am I a Jew? Your people and the high priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered him: “My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, my servants would have fought so that I would not fall into the hands of the Jews. But my Kingdom is not from here.”

Pilate said to him: “So you are a king?” Jesus answered him: “You said it. I am king. I was born and came into the world to be a witness to the truth. “Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

Let’s transform the world and give hope

Christ the King calls today, once again, to “establish his kingdom on earth,” so that the world, with our collaboration, may be transformed according to the divine plan of love. That task begins by letting Christ reign in each heart. This is not a proclamation or rhetorical statement, but a real and serious call to conversion. Let us embrace Grace and reject sin. Let’s not allow evil to advance.

Happy Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe!

Long live Christ the King!
