One of the 21 chosen to be cardinals of the Catholic Church since December 7 asked Pope Francis not to be created a cardinal, a request that the Holy Father has accepted, bringing the new cardinals to 20.
“Pope Francis has accepted the request of His Excellency Paskalis Bruno Syukur, Bishop of Bogor, in Indonesia, not to be created a cardinal during the next consistory,” notes a declaration by the director of the Vatican Press Office, Matteo Bruni, released this October 22.

“His Excellency’s request is motivated by his desire to continue to grow in priestly life, in service to the Church and the people of God,” the Vatican statement indicates, without giving further details.
The Holy Father announced the names of the new cardinals on Sunday, October 6, after the prayer of the Sunday Angelus in St. Peter’s Square.
Of the 20 new cardinals that will be created by Pope Francis, 5 are from Latin America.
Who is Paskalis Bruno Syukur, the bishop who will no longer be a cardinal?
Vatican News notes that Paskalis Bruno Syukur was born on May 17, 1962 in Ranggu, on the island of Flores, Indonesia. He is 62 years old. He studied at the Pius X Minor Seminary in Kisol after completing primary school.

He studied Philosophy at the Driyakara Faculty of Philosophy in Jakarta, and Theology at the Faculty of Theology in Yogyakarta. He made his solemn profession in the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) on January 22, 1989.
He was ordained a priest on February 2, 1991.
He held various service positions with the Franciscans, such as definer general Asia and Oceania since 2009.
On November 21, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Bogor, a diocese with just over 94,000 Catholics, representing 0.5% of the Indonesian city’s population.
