Archbishop asks to defend human life against abortion and euthanasia

The Archbishop of Mérida-Badajoz (Spain), Bishop José Rodríguez Carballo, calls to defend human life “by all means” and not to remain silent in the face of “media manipulation” on abortion and euthanasia in a recent letter.

In a letter in which he refers to the more than 100,000 abortions perpetrated in Spain in 2023, according to official figures, and to the dangerous regulation of conscientious objection that is being sought, Bishop Rodríguez proclaims that “the defense of human life , from conception to natural death, concerns every human being.”

As an example of this, remember how Hippocrates, “a Greek pagan” from the 5th century BC, defended human life, as stated in the oath that bears his name. Also that the Nathaniel Center for Bioethics of New Zealand has recently disseminated “12 non-religious arguments against euthanasia.”

Bishop Carballo concludes that “the defense of life is no longer a matter of creed, but is something that concerns every human being.”

However, for the Catholic, he points out, “the duty to defend human life is even more pressing, for obvious reasons. The first and foremost is our faith in the God of life, not death, and that no one can decide over the lives of others.”

For this reason, he adds, “in the face of misinformation and media manipulation about abortion and euthanasia, those of us who defend the rights of the unborn cannot remain silent. Life from its conception cannot be negotiated. “He defends himself by all means.”

The prelate recalls the philosopher Julián Marías, to proclaim that “the social acceptance of abortion is the most serious thing” that has occurred in the 20th century and that has continued since then, so that “the first half of the 21st century will be known by the of the silent and silenced genocide of hundreds of millions of children in the womb and of several thousand deceived adults.”

The archbishop concludes by pointing out the need to support this cause by demanding policies that promote life: “let us protect life against death. Let us pray for life, let us shout with a powerful voice our yes to life from its conception to its natural end.”
