Pope Francis expressed his sadness upon learning of “the injuries and loss of life” caused by the recent coal mine explosion in Tabas, Iran.
Through a telegram of condolences, signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, the Holy Father also sent “the assurance of his prayers for the deceased and for their grieving families.”

Likewise, he expressed his “spiritual solidarity with the injured” and invoked on all those affected by this tragedy “the blessings of the Almighty of strength, consolation and peace.”
Last Saturday, September 21, a methane leak caused an explosion at the Tabas mine in Iran, where 69 workers were working.
The accident left 50 dead and more than 20 people injured. Local authorities and rescue teams evacuated trapped people and assisted those affected.
The city of Tabas is known for its mining activity and has been the scene of other similar accidents in the past due to poor working conditions.
