Saint Therese died in fame of holiness in Lisieux on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24, a victim of tuberculosis. She was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 17, 1925, becoming, in the Pope’s own words, the “star of her pontificate.” Even though she was a cloistered nun during her youth, she is considered the patron saint of the missions due to her evangelizing impact produced precisely from the cloister. In addition, she has held the title of Doctor of the Universal Church since October 19, 1997, an honor granted by Pope Saint John Paul II within the framework of the celebrations for the first centenary of her death.

“For me, prayer is an impulse of the heart, a simple look at heaven, a cry of gratitude and love in sorrow as in joy” (Saint Therese of Lisieux).
