Every December 23 we celebrate Saint John Cancio, famous priest and theologian of the 15th century, considered patron of Poland – his native country – and Lithuania. He led an exemplary life, standing out for his simplicity, generosity, his good sense of humor, and for leading an austere life.
Jan Kanty – by his given name – was born on June 23, 1397, in the town of Kety, Kingdom of Poland. He studied at the University of Krakow, where he earned a doctorate in theology. He was ordained a priest at a very young age and then appointed professor of Sacred Scripture at his house of studies.
