Who was Saint Rose of Lima?
Isabel Flores de Oliva, Santa Rosa, was born in Lima (Peru) on April 20, 1586 and was baptized on May 25 of that same year.
Rosa received a careful education, thanks to which she learned of the figure and legacy of Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380), her spiritual teacher whom she would always admire.
It was confirmed in 1597 by Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo, then archbishop of Lima. It was this saint who would “officially” change Isabel’s name to Rosa, who after entering as a Dominican tertiary (laywoman) would be called Rosa de Santa María.
In addition to having many mystical experiences for which she is known—such as the mystical espousal to Christ—and imposing various physical pains on herself to atone for her and others’ sins, she always made time to care for the abandoned sick or abused slaves.
This is how she met San Martín de Porres, with whom she would become a good friend, with whom she shared the desire to help those most in need in whom they saw Christ suffering.
Every August 30 and in the days around this date, thousands of people come to the Rosa Sanctuary, in the historic center of Lima, to leave their letter in the so-called “wishing well” with some personal intention to ask for intercession. of the saint
Next, “The Salve” of Santa Rosa de Lima:
God save you beautiful Rosa,
by the Creator chosen,
for the Rosary garden,
as a Daughter of great esteem:
Life and fragrant sweetness
your virtues produced
planted until spirant
in the womb of Mary.
God save you pure Virgin,
our chosen lawyer,
we cry out to you surrendered
in this troubled land.
Banished children of Eve
all those who suffered,
from the most remote countries
They came to your remedy.
Ea, then, fruit of virtues,
of magnified humility,
What did Jesus do to your lover?
the center of his caresses.
Turn your pious eyes,
patron saint clement and pious,
and reach us grace from God
peace and eternal joy.
Amen.
Pray for us Blessed Virgin Holy Rose, so that we may be worthy of the graces of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
