Who is Cardinal Tolentino de Mendonça?
Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça was born in Madeira (Portugal). He is 58 years old, a theologian specialized in biblical studies and a university professor.
He is considered one of the most relevant writers of modern Portuguese literature and an eminent Catholic intellectual.
His works include pieces of poetry, essays and plays.
In his country, he was the first director of the National Secretariat for the Pastoral Care of Culture, a position he held from 2004 to 2014.
He also served as archivist and librarian of the Holy See since 2018, a position he himself described as an “ambassador of the Pope, but not to a country, but to humanity.”
Created a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2019, in 2022 he was appointed prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education.
