Local media reports claimed that the murdered brothers were altar boys from the parish. OK to the Catholic Multimedia Center, an organization that closely monitors violence against the Church in Mexico, one of the minors “was an altar boy and the other helped his mother with the work of cleaning the church.”
The spokesperson for the Diocese of Papantla, Father Lorenzo Rivas Fuentes, told ACI Prensa that one of the minors “was an altar boy years ago,” while the other “was a person who belonged to a youth group” in the parish.
Father Rivas also explained that the crime did not occur inside the Catholic temple, as some local media reported, but rather occurred in a nearby plaza.
Until a few days ago, the mother of the deceased young people was in charge of preparing food for the parish priest, added the spokesperson for the Mexican diocese.
Father Rivas also expressed his concern about the lack of peace in the region, pointing out that as the Catholic Church “we are concerned about this alarming situation of violence that occurs in different areas of social life.”
Finally, the spokesperson called on the authorities to carry out the necessary investigations, and asked the Catholic faithful to “pray for peace, pray for their eternal rest and for God to comfort the families of these minors.”
