10 Spanish cathedrals already offer a virtual reality tour

With the addition of the sites of Cádiz and Málaga in recent weeks, there are now 10 Spanish cathedrals, most of them centuries old, that offer the possibility of taking an immersive tour of the temples thanks to virtual reality.

By using 360º virtual reality glasses, visitors to the temples can fly over these unique buildings loaded with catechetical meaning and artistic value, tour their rooms in a unique way, or see animations of some works of art.

In the case of Malaga, furthermore, the experience allows us to contemplate a recreation of the final appearance that the cathedral could have had, if the original project had been completed.

This system is already implemented in the cathedrals of Barcelona, Salamanca, Ávila, Astorga, Jaén, Jerez de la Frontera, Sigüenza, Baeza, Cádiz and Málaga, as well as in two other relevant temples such as the Basilica of San Juan de Dios, in Granada, and the church of the Hospital de los Venerables, in Seville.

Antonio Ortiz, head of communications at Arti Splendore, a company specialized in promoting cultural tourism based on sacred art, explains to ACI Prensa that in this experience “the entire cathedral is shown in images from a drone flight” and that the voice accompanies the images “it has a more literary approach, because for the informative and descriptive there is already the audio guide itself” that is also offered in the cathedrals.

In the coming weeks, this experience will also be available in the Viterbo Cathedral (Italy) and in two more locations in Spain.

These immersive experiences are possible thanks to the combination of different techniques such as 3D modeling (in three dimensions) of the temple, the flight of drones equipped with cameras inside the temples and the use of and finally the use of a technique to computer image generation known as CGI.

In each cathedral, 360º virtual immersion is available in a different number of languages.
